HRH The Prince of Wales joins school pupils and athletes in wishing Team Wales good luck ahead of Glasgow 2026
His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales visited Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain (The London Welsh School) today to join pupils and several Team Wales athletes in sending their best wishes to the 114-strong squad ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Ahead of the Games kicking off later this month, HRH The Prince of Wales paid a special visit today to Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain (The London Welsh School) in Hanwell, West London. The Prince of Wales was joined by four Team Wales athletes as they met with school pupils and discussed what excites them most about the Games returning to Glasgow this summer.
The visit marked another stop on the Glasgow 2026 Medal Tour, giving the nation a chance to experience the unique prize medals up close, with the aim of bringing communities closer to the action ahead of this summer's Commonwealth Games and invite people across the UK to be part of an altogether brilliant Games.
Bowler Ross Owen and visually-impaired Para Bowler Julie Thomas, who will compete alongside director John Wilson, were joined by Weightlifters Catrin Haf Jones and Madaline Connelly at the school visit. With athletes recently receiving their official Team Wales kit, their excitement continues to build ahead of the Games.
Founded in 1958, Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain is a bilingual Welsh-English primary school for children aged three to eleven. As the only Welsh-medium primary school outside of Wales and Patagonia, it plays a unique role in promoting Welsh language and culture among families living in London.
Team Wales will travel to Glasgow with a squad of 114 athletes, including 67 women and 47 men, ranging in age from 16 to 73 years old. The Welsh contingent features a strong blend of Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth champions and will have representation across all 10 sports and six Para sports.
Olympic champions Matt Richards and Emma Finucane, together with reigning Paralympic gold medallist James Ball, are among the standout names in the Welsh squad heading to Glasgow 2026. Ball is one of several athletes returning to defend Commonwealth titles won at Birmingham 2022, alongside bowls champion Daniel Salmon, boxer Rosie Eccles and Para Athletics gold medallists Olivia Breen and Aled Davies.
The squad also features a number of Commonwealth Games debutants, including Team Wales’ 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball teams, who will make their inaugural Games appearance after receiving wildcard entries to the men's and women's competitions at the SEC Centre.
